How were the locations selected?
Selecting the appropriate location for all RCC buildings has been a rigorous process. The Department conducted various assessments to mitigate risks and threats to each building, including:
- avoiding areas that could be at risk from aircraft incidents
- avoiding areas at risk from flooding when considering flood plains and local mitigation measures
- considering demographics, for example the site's proximity to areas with sufficient population to staff the RCCs
- identifying accessibility to the site, including proximity to major roads and public transport
- proximity to IT communications - the communications network must provide two-way connections between RCCs, FRA HQ and fire stations
- availability of services such as water, drainage and sewerage
- availability of wireless communications - ensuring the site is located in an area that doesn't restrict radio or microwave communication
