Resilience research
Communities and Local Government contributes to cross-government resilience initiatives, and supports many aspects of the UK Resilience Capabilities Programme, ensuring that the UK is able to cope with any major catastrophic incident, including terrorist attacks. The Fire and Resilience Directorate (FRD) is responsible for the development of Communities and Local Government's resilience policies and co-ordination of its resilience projects.
Resilience Research Branch (RRB) carries out scientific and technical research in support of Communities and Local Government's resilience policies. They also work across government on other resilience-related research to ensure that initiatives are joined-up and information is shared, including participating in the Home Office Chemical, Biological, Radiological or Nuclear (CBRN) Science and Technology Programme.
Some of the ways in which RRB currently contributes to UK resilience include:
- Developing simulation models for the deployment of Fire and Rescue Service New Dimension assets;
- Providing the Geographic Information System to regional resilience teams;
- Developing decision aids for the response to HAZMAT and CBRN incidents; and
- Evaluating personal protective equipment and detection, identification and monitoring equipment for the Fire and Rescue Service.
