Information for suppliers about our procurement policies and what to do if you want to tender to the Department.
The term 'procurement' means the buying of goods and services. For a Government department, effective procurement should combine best value for money, transparent use of funds and clear communication with suppliers.
We aim to balance quality and cost against best meeting the needs of the user. To keep the process fair, we procure by competition wherever possible, and in a number of ways depending on the scale and nature of the goods or services required.
Instead of individual contracts with companies, we mainly use framework arrangements. These are agreements with suppliers chosen to provide goods and services on certain terms pre-agreed according to EU procurement directives.
Contracts are still needed for work not available through the frameworks. Depending on value, these are advertised in the Official Journal of the European Union or the press. For larger projects we invite formal tenders.
