Recruitment – our approach

Outlines our approach to recruitment, including our championing of a diverse, vibrant workforce.

All recruitment at Communities and Local Government is carried out under the 'fair and open competition' rules, set out in a document called the Civil Service Commissioners' Recruitment Code. To be 'fair and open', we:

  • welcome applications from anyone with the right qualifications, regardless of gender, marital status, race, disability, age or sexual orientation
  • publicise vacancies so everyone has an equal opportunity to apply
  • provide full, clear details about advertised jobs, and the selection process

We offer our posts on a permanent or a fixed term basis. We also consider requests for flexible working.

Selection process

For administrative and first-rung, non-specialist management jobs, the selection process normally consists of one or more tests, and successful applicants are invited to interview.

Minimum requirements for specialist grades will normally be shown in the advertisements. The selection process for these normally consists of a paper sift to draw up a list of applicants to be invited to interview.

How vacancies are advertised

All our vacancies are advertised in the national press and/or the specialist media. Vacancies are also on our website.
