Welcome from our Legal Director Sandra Unerman

A message from our Legal Director

Sandra Unerman

The Legal Directorate in the Department works with administrators to assist them in the process of shaping and delivering policy goals. We aim to identify solutions and to avoid pitfalls. Our objective is to provide a high quality legal service to Ministers and officials and in this way support the delivery of policy. The Directorate's ethos is one of customer care.

My role is to lead and to manage the Legal Directorate and to promote its interests within and outside the Department. I contribute to the corporate management of the Government Legal Service as a member of its forum. I also provide legal advice and am responsible for the quality of the work provided by the Directorate as a whole. Assisting me are the Deputy Directors who head the teams within the Directorate.

The Directorate covers a wide variety of interesting topics and provides excellent training, not only in the law, but also in personal development. We also participate in the Legal Trainee Scheme administered by the Government Legal Service.

If you're interested, why not take a look at the case studies to see what it's like working as a lawyer and trainee in the Department?
