If you are a member of the general public and your enquiry is either:

related to your proposed building work
a question about how to interpret building regulations
a question about how to comply with building regulations
a request for further information in relation to building works, regulations or the operation of the building control system

In the first instance please contact your local authority building control department who should be able to assist you. You may find it helpful to refer to your local Council's website.

If, however, you are from a trade or other professional body and need specific advice from the Department, or your local authority advises that they are unable to answer your question, please contact us and we will do what we can to assist you or direct you to an appropriate source of information. Please note: we are unable to provide any technical advice to members of the public in relation to a dispute with a local authority (or an approved inspector) over compliance of building work with building regulations in relation to a particular case. You should try to resolve the matter with the local authority/approved inspector in the first instance. However, if you are unable to do so you may wish to consider whether you have a case for requesting a formal determination from, or making an appeal to, this Department or the National Assembly for Wales.
