Estate background

Communities and Local Government is a relatively small department with about 3,700 staff across 27 properties. Most of our sites are offices where there are standard sustainability issues around energy use, waste, paper, procurement and travel. But there are also two significant non-office sites: the Fire Service College in Gloucestershire and the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre (QEIICC) in central London.

The Fire Service College provides internationally renowned, residential fire service training at Moreton-in-Marsh. The Conference Centre is a prestige facility whose energy and water consumption largely reflects its use by 500,000 delegates every year.

Local and corporate knowledge of our direct environmental impacts is good, and comes from comprehensive data collection and an annual reporting process.
