Estate Impact

The Government's vision for a sustainably managed estate is one in which principles of sustainable development underlie all its working practices

Our estate and sustainable development

The Government's vision for a sustainably managed estate is one which:

  • is modern and resource-efficient
  • has well-conserved and managed land
  • uses space efficiently
  • ensures the principles of sustainable development underlie all its working practices

To encourage its departments to work towards more sustainable estates, the Government launched new sustainability targets in June 2006 for all central Government properties and buildings. These sustainable operations targets address the main impacts the Government's day-to-day business may have on sustainable development.

These are the target areas:

  • carbon neutrality
  • carbon emissions
  • energy efficiency
  • waste and recycling
  • biodiversity
  • water consumption
