Fire Statistics Monitor Quarter 2: 1 July 2006 - 30 June 2007

Find out about National Statistics The latest National Statistics on fires, casualties and false alarms attended by the Fire and Rescue Services in the United Kingdom produced by Communities and Local Government were released on Friday 20 June 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics in this release cover a range of issues concerning Fire incidents in the United Kingdom including fires, casualties and false alarms attended by the Fire and Rescue Services in the United Kingdom from 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2007.

The key points are:

  • The United Kingdom Fire and Rescue Services attended 861,700 fire and false alarm incidents in the 12 month period ending 30 June 2007 - a 1 per cent increase on the previous 12 months.
  • There were 447 fire deaths in this period - down 5 per cent on the previous 12 months and the lowest figure since before 1950. Dwelling fire deaths fell by 10 per cent to 317, the lowest total since records began. These fire death figures for the year ending 30 June 2007 are provisional.
  • Primary fires fell by 6 per cent to 153,300. This is the lowest total since 1983. Within this dwelling fires are at their lowest since 1978 (54,200, down 4 per cent), fires in other buildings - including workplaces and areas where people gather - are down by 4 per cent to 32,200 and road vehicle fires again fell (by 11 per cent to 55,500) to their lowest total since 1989. Secondary fires rose by 4 per cent to 263,000.
  • Attendances at false alarms increased by 2 per cent to 436,800. Within this there was a 9 per cent fall (to 32,400) in malicious false alarms and a 2 per cent increase (to 284,000) in false alarms due to apparatus.
