Statistics and boundaries for Retail Cores in England and Wales, 1999-2004

Statistics and boundaries for Retail Cores in England and Wales for 1999-2004 were published on 20 May 2008.

This release follows on from the publication of the statistics and boundaries for Areas of Town Centre Activity (ATCA) for 1999-2004 on 13 December 2007 and updates the 2000 and 2002 Retail Cores boundaries and statistics published previously. Retail Cores are areas within ATCAs that have a high density of retail employees and retail floorspace.

For 1999 to 2004, around 600 Retail Cores have been identified in each year and a variety of statistics on each, including its boundary size, are available on the State of the Cities Database at: www.socd.communities.gov.uk/socd (external link).

For each Retail Core the following statistics are available (subject to meeting certain disclosure thresholds):

    • Convenience retail employees;
    • Comparison retail employees;
    • Service retail employees;
  • Floorspace (in m2) and Rateable value (in £):
    • Retail premises;
    • A1 (shops) use class premises;
