The planning framework

Planning Policy Guidance 17: Planning for Open Space, Sport and Recreation provides the planning framework for the provision and protection of open spaces, sports and recreational facilities, including play areas for children and teenagers.

It promotes social inclusion, health and well-being by ensuring that everyone has easy access to good quality sport and recreation facilities and open space.

It also promotes a strategic, evidence-based approach to provision of quality green spaces by requiring local authorities to audit existing facilities and make rigorous assessments of the existing and future needs of their communities for open space, sports and recreational facilities.
