Communities and neighbourhoods

How to programme

Through our How to programme, we are working with practitioners in local authorities and other bodies at all levels, to ensure they have the inspiration they need to make their local environment a better place to live and work. Through guidance, seminars and working directly with local areas, the programme will help to capture and promote innovation and good practice. It will also help government to understand and prioritise the issues affecting local neighbourhoods and people and practitioners.

The How to programme also aims to raise the quality of town centres, residential areas and streets, and parks and green spaces through three guides. The How to Create Quality Parks and Open Spaces guide was published and launched in July 2005.

The Sustainable Communities Plan   established good quality local environments as a key component of Sustainable Communities, and allocated resources to take forward a comprehensive range of Cleaner, Safer, Greener Communities programmes, including:

  • Living Spaces scheme - giving direct help to communities to transform spaces on their doorstep
  • Liveability Fund - to improve local authority service delivery and physical improvements.
  • Support for Groundwork
  • Support for CABE and urban design skills - including the creation of CABE Space to champion public spaces
  • A special grants programme
