Operation black vote

A scheme, run by Operation Black Vote in conjunction with the Commission for Racial Equality and Human Rights Commission, is an MP-shadowing scheme, giving an opportunity to people from ethnic minority communities to assist MPs and active peers with their daily work.

This helps demystify the political process and encourages those on the programme to follow up their interest in politics.

Indeed, since the start of the scheme in 1999, a number of participants have had candidacy approved for council elections and three have been elected as councillors. This work has been complemented by the Understanding Power project, delivered in schools and colleges to teach young people about power and political dynamics.

The aim is for those who have participated in, or been reached by, these schemes to help embed a culture of active political participation within their communities.

They are now looking to recruit 20 National Black men as Role Models to inspire and motivate young Black males. For further information visit our REACH pages on the right hand side of this page.
