Communities and neighbourhoods

Place matters

The vision for Communities and Local Government is of prosperous and cohesive communities, offering a safe, healthy and sustainable environment for all. In promoting it the Department takes the strategic lead across Government on:

  • equal opportunities and social justice
  • better homes and neighbourhoods
  • strong and accountable local government and leadership
  • better local services and environment
  • regeneration and investment in our towns, cities and regions
  • safe, tolerant and inclusive communities.

Through this lead across Government, its breadth of responsibilities and its role in setting the framework for bringing together many of these functions at different spatial levels, the Department can help places across the country to achieve this vision, recognising that it may take shape in different ways in particular places.
