Digital Mentors

In July 2008 Communities and Local Government launched Communities in Control: Real People, Real Power . This announced an initiative to develop a network of "Digital Mentors" working in deprived communities in England which would help more individuals to use social and community media. Through increasing skills in using websites, podcasts, digital photography, online publishing tools and local broadcast media, Communities and Local Government wish to:

  • empower individuals and communities by giving those citizens who feel 'voiceless' or 'unheard' new tools to express their views and collaborate on issues of relevance to them
  • provide informal and formal learning opportunities and assist people into employment, particularly in the creative industries
  • improve access to public and other services

Communities and Local Government have now appointed the Media Trust to take this work forward. Contact the Media Trust for more information.

DIUS and Communities and Local Government will work with the Media Trust on developing the network of Digital Mentors. Community groups will have the opportunity to develop their own websites, blogs and chatrooms, develop and publish podcasts about their local areas and share pictures and videos about their own community and the things that matter to them.
