Cities and regions

About cities and regions

Communities and Local Government's vision is to create economically strong cities and regions which enhance England's national prosperity and provide opportunities for everyone, wherever they happen to live.

We aim to narrow disparities in growth rates between different regions by boosting the economic performance of all regions and helping English cities to compete in the international market. This will help us to create vibrant, diverse and attractive places where people want to live, work and play.

The performance of the major cities is crucial in lifting regional economies and the performance of cities and regions is inter-dependent.

The Local Government White Paper published in October 2006 stressed the importance of cities and highlighted the need for strong local leadership for improving economic growth.
