Summary

Sub-regional results derived from the Survey of English Housing (SEH) are published for the first time in this bulletin. The SEH is a continuous household survey carried out for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister by the National Centre for Social Research, providing important housing data on owner occupation and on the social and private rented sectors.

The SEH sample, around 20,000 households, is large enough to allow annual results to be derived for Government Office regions but not for sub-regions. Therefore in order to allow analysis at a smaller geographical level, results from the 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03 surveys have been combined. Only one-way analyses are shown in this bulletin, because two-way analyses would require larger samples than are available for most NUTS2 areas.

The sub-regional results for England relate to the NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Statistics) area classification at level 2, the highest sub-regional level. NUTS is a hierarchical classification of areas within the territory of the European Union intended to allow regional and sub-regional statistics to be produced that are comparable across the Union.

The NUTS2 areas are defined at Annex A in terms of Government Office regions, Counties and Unitary Authorities.
