Summary

The latest Census was held on Sunday 29 April 2001. It was the twentieth full national
Census of population marking 200 years since the first census in modern times was carried
out in Great Britain.

This short report introduces users to the Census data available on housing and households,
bringing together relevant Census data, with data from a number of other survey and
administrative sources. In general, differences between sources are noted, but not always
fully explained. A fuller report, to be published later in 2003, will aim to reconcile these
differences as far as possible.
