Meg was elected in June 2001 as the Labour / Co-operative MP for Sheffield Heeley. Meg joined Communities and Local Government in May 2006. Prior to this, she held the same position at the Department of Trade and Industry. She has previously been Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Minister for Children, Margaret Hodge, and chair of the Women's Committee of the Parliamentary Labour Party and Chair of the Co-operative Group of MPs.
Meg was brought up in the constituency she now represents. She went on to study at York University and later at Nottingham University. As a trained social worker Meg worked in Berkshire, Nottinghamshire, Barnsley, Wakefield and York. Meg was a City Councillor in Nottingham between 1987 and 1991, and before becoming an MP she was the Assistant Director for Children's Services at the City of York Council.
Meg's interests include social enterprise, education, children and young people, social welfare and Europe. She has been a member of the Labour Party for over 30 years and a member of the Co-operative Party for over 20 years.
Meg has been an active member of the Methodist Church for over 25 years. She is also multi-lingual, speaking fluent French and German and conversational Italian.
