Indices of deprivation 2000: introductory information

The Indices of Deprivation 2000 are measures of deprivation for every ward and local authority area in England. It combines a number of indicators which cover a range of domains (Income, Employment, Health Deprivation and Disability, Education, Skills and Training, Housing and Geographical Access to Services) into a single deprivation score for each area.
Background
Summary Report
The summary report includes details of the domains and indicators, the methodology, the presentation of results and interpretation, guidance on how to use the indices and a comparison of the Indices of Deprivation 2000 with 1988 Index of Local Deprivation.
Data
This contains the ID 2000 for each ward and Local Authority District in England, available as two Excel files.
Consultation Processes (working papers)
Throughout the review, the DTLR and the Research Team have been committed to continuous and effective consultation. These working papers represent the on-going process of the review, and detail the processes which have been undertaken to produce the indices.
Response to the formal consultation
This report is in question and answer format and deals with the questions and comments raised during the entire period of consultation. It pulls together many issues raised in the working papers.
1998 Index of Local Deprivation
The ID 2000 updates the 1998 Index of Local Deprivation. This is available as a summary report, number 15.
Further work
The report Changing Fortunes: geographic patterns of Income Deprivation in the late 1990s provides a new insight into deprivation at the local level. It presents a picture of claimant numbers and claiming rates for one period 1995 to 1998.
