The Architects Registration Board

Communities and Local Government is the sponsoring department for the statutory body, which is responsible for the registration of architects, the Architects Registration Board (ARB).

The ARB succeeded the Architects Registration Council of the United Kingdom (ARCUK) and its duties and functions are defined by the Architects Act 1997 at http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1997/1997022.htm. It was established to guarantee the professional competence of architects to consumers of architectural services.

In order to practice legally in the United Kingdom, all architects must be registered by the ARB, which is also responsible for upholding the competency and integrity of architects through its Professional Conduct Committee. The 15 member board consists of eight appointed lay members and seven elected architect members.

Further details are available from the Board's website at www.arb.org.uk.

The Communities and Local Government contact point for matters concerning architects' registration and professional recognition across the European Union is enquiries.br@communities.gsi.gov.uk
